What is moxa?

Derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this therapeutic practice involves the burning of Moxa, an herb made from dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), near specific acupuncture points on the body. As an integral part of TCM, Moxibustion offers a unique approach to healing and wellness. In this blog, we will explore its benefits and applications.
The History of Moxibustion
Moxibustion has a rich history dating back over 3,000 years in China. It is believed to have originated during the time of the legendary Chinese emperor Huang Di, who is considered the father of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over time, Moxibustion became an essential component of TCM, used alongside acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other traditional healing methods.

How Moxibustion Works
The fundamental principle behind Moxibustion is to stimulate the body's vital energy, known as "Qi" (pronounced chee), and balance the flow of "Qi" along meridians or energy pathways. According to TCM theory, an imbalance in Qi can lead to various physical and emotional ailments. By applying heat from burning Moxa to specific acupuncture points, practitioners aim to nourish the body's Qi and restore harmony, thus promoting overall well-being. Moxibustion also helps warm and tonify the body, helping boost deficient systems and bring needed circulation to blocked areas.

Types of Moxibustion
There are several techniques and types of Moxibustion, each offering distinct benefits:
  1. Indirect Moxibustion: At Yoga Mamas our TCM practitioners primarily use this method for patient comfort. It involves placing an ignited moxa stick (which looks similar to a cigar) close to but not directly on the skin at acupuncture points. It is also known as “smokeless.” The heat generated promotes healing.

  2. Direct Moxibustion: In this method, small cones or balls of Moxa are placed directly on the skin at specific acupuncture points and ignited. The Moxa is removed before it burns the skin, making it suitable for various health conditions.

  3. Warm Needle Moxibustion: Practitioners warm the tip of an acupuncture needle by attaching a Moxa stick to it before inserting it into the acupuncture point. This technique enhances the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.

Benefits of Moxibustion
Moxibustion offers a wide range of benefits, some may include:
  1. Pain Relief: Moxibustion is often used to alleviate various types of pain, such as menstrual discomfort, muscle pain and arthritis.

  2. Improved Digestion: It may help regulate the digestive system, relieve bloating, and reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders.

  3. Stress Reduction: The soothing warmth of Moxibustion may have a calming effect, promoting relaxation and reducing stress and anxiety.

  4. Enhanced Immune Function: Some studies suggest that Moxibustion may boost the immune system and increase the body's resistance to illness.

  5. Prenatal Support: Moxibustion is sometimes used to support women's health during pregnancy.

Before trying Moxibustion or any other traditional healing technique, it's important to consult a qualified and licensed TCM practitioner. They will assess your individual health needs and create a personalized treatment plan.

A Note About yoga Mamas' Cancellation Policies

Please note that we do not offer refunds. Each event/course/training/wellness appt has it's own specific cancellation policy which is listed on each registration page. Please take the time to read these in full prior to registering.  Each event/appointment that we run is in partnership with a practitioner who is focusing their independent career in pre and postnatal health. This is their beautiful livelihood. This is why we have these policies in place. Thank you very much for your understanding. Jamie Kalynuik, Founder of Yoga Mamas
