Toronto Yoga Mamas Postpartum Doula Training

8/27/2016

Picture
Toronto Yoga Mamas, located in Toronto's trendy Leslieville neighbourhood, is excited to announce that our DONA-approved Postpartum Doula Workshop will be running (again) this winter - from November 18th - 20th 2016.

The Postpartum Doula Training Workshop is ideal for women who have a passion for working with babies, nurturing families, and building capacity in others.

This DONA-approved training can be used towards your certification with DONA.org and provides you with the skills necessary to support families during the first 3 months of new parenthood - so that they can ease into their new roles. The Postpartum Doula Workshop focuses on: normal newborn behaviour cues, postpartum adjustment, and typical questions (and concerns) that arise with new families.  At the completion of the workshop, participants will receive a Postpartum Doula Certificate - meaning that you can begin to work with families as soon as your feel confident to do so! :)

Many participants will choose to continue on with the certification process through DONA International, and most find that the workshop helps them identify areas in which they could benefit from further education, or experience, for instance: in breastfeeding support or sleep support.

The schedule for Toronto Yoga Mama's November Postpartum Doula Workshop is:

Friday, November 18th 8:00am - 6:30pm
Saturday, November 19th 8:00am - 6:30pm
Sunday, November 20th 8:00am - 6:30pm

(*Includes scheduled breaks and lunches.)

Tuition:

ADVANCE PRICING:
$499 if you register before September 30th

REGULAR PRICING:
$549 if you register after October 1st

This captivating workshop is taught by Trena Slaunwhite Gallant, a DONA Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula Trainer, Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Hypnobirthing Practitioner, and Infant Massage Instructor. Having worked with expecting families, and new parents, for over 10 years - she brings a wealth of experience-grounded knowledge in the field of Doula work and looks forward to meeting you and teaching you what you need to know to begin your new path in Doula work!

"My husband and I really enjoyed our TYM Childbirth Education session with Adrienne. We felt that because the class size was small enough (only 6 couples) we were able to really get to know the other parents-to-be in our class. Having that sense of connection with the other couples really helps when discussing your thoughts and emotions, and you don't feel afraid to ask questions. We also felt that the content that Adrienne covered was extensive and really encouraged each of the couples to explore and navigate their own journey through pregnancy and prepare for birth. Adrienne was great at teaching us to advocate for our own choices as parents. And of course, the TYM studio is such a warm and welcoming place; being in a familiar location was comfortable and enjoyable."

The TYM Childbirth Education Course tuition is: $300/per couple

3 Tips To Handle The Noise On Decisions For Baby-To-Be

8/18/2016

How to cut through confusion when pregnant women are 'bombarded' with health advice
Picture
Original Article By Amina Zafar on CBC News Posted: Aug 18, 2016.
Earlier this week Yoga Mamas' Chiropractor Dr. Aliya Visram was interviewed in our studio by CBC as part of a story on the recent news that use of the popular pain reliever acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase the risk of behavioural problems in children is a recent example.

With so much information available, and many of it conflicting, mamas and mamas-to-be can be left even more confused than before they set off looking for answers.

Dr. Aliya Visram is seven months pregnant with her second child and focuses her practice on prenatal and postnatal chiropractic care in Toronto. She's seen pregnant women come to her fearful about how to deal with pains in the back, groin, hip and elsewhere. She often recommends non-pharmacological approaches to pain, such as yoga.

"As mothers and mothers-to-be, we all want to do what's best for our babies and children," Visram said to CBC.

"I think building a relationship with your health care practitioner, especially during pregnancy, is crucially important and is a great place to start when faced with conflicting information."

Emily Oster, author of Expecting Better, offers 3 tips to cut through the confusion and handle the noise on decisions for baby-to-be:
  1. Compare probabilities in pregnancy with the risks women are often willing to take, such as driving a car.
  2. Take a  closer look at the risk. Studies often present risks as odds ratios, such as something increases the risk by five times. But it matters if it's the odds of something that's one in a million or one in 20.
  3. Consider how believable the results of a study are.

A Note About yoga Mamas' Cancellation Policies

Please note that we do not offer refunds. Each event/course/training/wellness appt has it's own specific cancellation policy which is listed on each registration page. Please take the time to read these in full prior to registering.  Each event/appointment that we run is in partnership with a practitioner who is focusing their independent career in pre and postnatal health. This is their beautiful livelihood. This is why we have these policies in place. Thank you very much for your understanding. Jamie Kalynuik, Founder of Yoga Mamas
