Written by Dr. Shannon Vander Doelen, Naturopathic Doctor at Yoga MamasWe all know that when our tooth hurts we should see a dentist, when our back hurts we should pay a trip to our chiropractor, and if we’ve broken our leg we should get to the ER, stat! What’s a little more confusing though is figuring out when you might pay a trip to the Naturopathic Doctor (ND). I’ve been there too so I get it, and I want to clear up the confusion - so here are 5 reasons why you might want to see an ND. 1, To address a health concern from a natural perspective.Instead of using medications or surgery, Naturopathic Doctors use diet, lifestyle medicine, supplements (like vitamins, minerals or herbs) and acupuncture to address your health concerns. And rather than just suppressing a symptom, we work to figure out the cause of it and treat that. 2. To optimize your health. No one wants to just feel “fine” or “normal” - so when you don’t feel amazing and all of your blood work checks out okay, seeking the help of a Naturopathic Doctor is a great idea. We will work with you to improve your energy, support your sleep, ensure your hormones are in balance, and so much more to take “fine and normal” to “fantastic and optimal” in no time! 3. To get a second opinion.Naturopathic Doctors are medically trained and naturally focused. We receive extensive training in medical diagnostics and are able to make diagnoses. If you’d like a second opinion about your health, or how to treat a medical condition you’ve been diagnosed with, speaking with an ND can be like taking a look at your health through a different lens. 4. To get more involved in your health care. There are no magic pills or diets that can solve all that ails you, but a daily commitment to your health is guaranteed to help you to see results you’re after. Your ND can make recommendations and provide support, but ultimately your health is in your hands. If you’re excited about taking on that responsibility for yourself, then working with an ND, who practices patient-centered care (not doctor-centered care) is going to be a good fit for you. 5. To get back on track with your health.Think of your Naturopathic Doctor like your coach or a cheerleader, we are in your corner rooting you on! If you have fallen off the bandwagon with your health, we can help you to get back on track in a realistic and sustainable way. Your ND can be your accountability partner, and help guide the course if things get challenging.
