Megan joined the Toronto Yoga Mamas community in June 2015 when she took her Blooma Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training with us, and became a member of the Toronto Yoga Mamas Doula Team in April 2016.
Supporting parents during such a unique time in their life is truly an honour for Megan, her work as a doula has been and continues to be both humbling and inspiring. Megan came to doula work back in early 2015. But before starting on this career path, Megan was intending to be a career academic, only after she deciding not to pursue her PhD in gender studies, she found herself managing projects in knowledge translation and research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. In 2012 that all changed when Megan decided to take a career break and travelled abroad for over 2 years teaching yoga. Once she returned, wanting to get back to working in a positive space for women, while also capitalizing on her nearly 15 years of experience working in research, and education in a hospital setting she stumbled on doula work, and the rest is history... Megan comes to doula work with a variety of experience, from her movement based work to facilitate labour, her training as a Birthing From Within Advanced Mentor, to her Crucial Conversations training. Megan prides herself in providing non-judgmental support to help her clients equip themselves with the tools and information needed to make the choices that feel right to them, and how to best communicate those with their health team. One of Megan's most memorable moments was early on in her career as a birth doula and she helped a client reach down to receive her baby. Not every mama wants to do this, but this particular client was so overwhelmed by having caught her own baby (with the assistance of the OB) it was a very special and unforgettable moment to bear witness to. We asked Megan to share with us her recommendations on hiring a doula. Here is what she told us: Hiring a doula can be a very personal decision.
