Dr. Michelle MacDonald is a Chiropractor at Yoga Mamas who specializes in Preconception, Prenatal, Postnatal and Paediatric health. As part of our #wellnessformamas series, we sat down to discuss Michelle's favourite things about her life as a Chiropractor.
Why did you become a Chiropractor?
Dr. Michelle: This is a question I get asked a lot in practice and the reason is fairly simple - it literally changed my dad’s life. I remember him always having a “bad back”. He would be flat on his back usually once a year for a week or two. Traditional Western medicine could only offer him anti-inflammatories to help manage the pain and he seemed to eat them like tic-tacs with minimal to no relief. Luckily, someone he worked with convinced him to go see their massage therapist. She was a huge help but she also recommended he see the Chiropractor at her office. I then started attending all his appointments, as I was completely fascinated on how she was helping to heal his body. He still continues to go and instantly feels better after seeing them both.
What do you love most your job?
Dr. Michelle: This is more difficult to answer, only because it is hard to choose one reason. I love the interaction with people. I have great conversations and learn so much from my patients but ultimately it’s helping people out and eliminating their pain that drives me to be the best at what I do.
If you weren't a Chiropractor, what would you be?
Dr. Michelle: I use to always want to be a Paediatrician. I always knew I would work with children in some capacity. My other option now would be a midwife! Since being out in the Chiropractic field I see the relationships they develop with moms and moms to be and I think they work they do is unbelievable.
What do you enjoy most about being on the Yoga Mamas' wellness team?
Dr. Michelle: Probably the feeling of community. All the practitioners have a lot of respect for each other and cross-reference to make sure the patient is getting the most out of the studio and wellness team. We all truly want these mamas and babies to be the best version of themselves.
What message do you hope your Patients take away from their time with you?
Dr. Michelle: How important their health is! Health is wealth and I want my patients to invest in themselves. I want them and their families to live active and healthy lifestyles and I am always willing to work with my patients to build a plan that will work for them. I am just as invested in their health as they are.
