Meet Yoga Mamas Doula, Suki, a vibrant 50-year-old with a love for the outdoors, two young adult sons, and a spirited miniature Australian shepherd. With a background in social work, she's always been drawn to people, advocacy, counseling, and the joy of being around babies and children. Inspired by her own birth experiences and a mother deeply involved in childbirth education, Suki found her calling in supporting pregnant and parenting individuals on their journey. Continue reading below to learn more about Suki. What drew you to doula work? In my first birth, I felt like I did not have a voice, and that everything happened to me instead of for me. When I was pregnant, with my first, I met a handful of amazing women who were involved in prenatal care and birth support, who became dear friends, and this initiated a real interest in getting involved in helping people feel like they have control over their own birth experiences. If you weren't a doula, what would you do? I would likely be working back in social services, supporting women and children in some capacity. I’m actually hoping to apply for my Masters of Social Work and get into Psychotherapy in the next five years I will likely always continue to do birth work as well. Supporting families is such an important role. Any favourite books in your toolkit? The Birth Partner is my favourite birth book. Now, onto the important stuff—snacks! What's your favourite postpartum snack? My homemade health food fudge, or my homemade high-protein fruit muffins. You'll need to share your recipe with us! What does your perfect off-call day look like? Taking my dog out for a nice early morning, walk, crawling, back into bed with a latte and a book and some choral music on the radio, a nap, some meditation and yoga, more outside time, working out, making a healthy dinner with my family, and hopefully some laughter with friends, possibly binge watching some thing on Netflix. Any advice for expectant parents? To trust your instincts, to ask for help, to feel that this experience is hard as well as rewarding, and to give yourself as much self-care, as you possibly can, together and alone. Lastly, share a fun fact about you that people might not know. I sing every day and secretly dream that I had pursued singing as a profession. Interested in hiring a doula?
