Aside from being a Chiropractor and Acupuncturist at Yoga Mamas, Dr. Aliya Visram is a health expert and wellness advocate who took the time to sit down with us to discuss her life as a Chiropractor and why she loves it.
Why did you become a Chiropractor?
Dr. Aliya: I knew from a very early age that I loved helping others. My true inspiration really came from my mom and dad. I remember volunteering at nursing homes and hospitals with them when I was nine years old. We would spend hours reading to the residents and just sitting and talking with the elderly patients. It always left me with a warm fuzzy feeling, like maybe I made a teeny tiny difference in someone’s day. I loved that feeling and decided that I needed to feel that every day, so healthcare was an obvious career path. Chiropractic just made sense to me and the rest is history. Now, I get warm fuzzy feelings on a daily basis.
What do you love most your job?
Dr. Aliya: For me, it all boils down to the patients. Honestly, I feel truly blessed to have such wonderful patients from my little itty bitty mini ones to my sage ol’ wise ones – they all give me such a sense of fulfillment knowing that I may be helping them in some small way.
If you weren't a Chiropractor, what would you be?
Dr. Aliya: According to my teenage diary, one of my dreams was to be a dancer for the National Ballet of Canada. I love to dance and ballet is so graceful and magical. I am still entranced by the beauty of movement and love seeing a performance at least once a year!
Aliya you just had your second baby - how has becoming a mother changed your practice?
Dr. Aliya: Someone once said that “being a mother is learning about the strengths you didn’t know you had and dealing with the fears you never knew existed.”
Motherhood has given me new perspective and renewed appreciation for the challenges every mother faces, the strength they harness to overcome those challenges and the selflessness they possess to keep moving forward. It’s opened my eyes to the sheer power a woman’s body has to grow and give life and its ability to heal. As a mother of two I can relate firsthand to many of my female patients who are expecting and have had babies.
What do you enjoy most about being on the Yoga Mamas' wellness team?
Dr. Aliya: The TYM team is such an amazing group of dedicated practitioners all with the same goal of helping women feel their best. The studio and wellness center is full of warmth and love where women can connect with themselves, each other and their babes.
What message do you hope your Patients take away from their time with you?
Dr. Aliya: I hope to inspire and empower my patients to make their health and the health of their families a priority. To encourage positive choices and to embrace change in a way that heals from the inside out.
